WannaCrypt has crippled the National Health Service infrastructure as throughout the NHS they primarily run XP (only a few departments on Windows 7) . How has this happened?
Many commentators with no knowledge of the NHS infrastructure make quotes such as "I have no sympathy" claiming the IT department of the NHS should have upgraded long ago. Its true it is taking a long time but there are genuine reasons for this.
1) Underfunding from the UK Government. Any funds available are directed away from the IT Department of the NHS infrastructure.
2) Its not a simple case of upgrading from XP as much of the highly specialised software was specifically written for XP and would be incompatible with later versions of the platform.
3) Much of highly specialised software would need to be entirely rewritten which would cost millions of pounds, much more than the upgrade of the operating system itself.
